Our entire elk industry was under attack this past year, and faced many false accusations and mis-truths in regards to our elk operations. This situation was a perfect example of what happens when certain Government Agencies are both over-powered and over-funded. Our Elk Industry in Idaho takes great pride in our disease free status. Some opposition groups had made many attempts to "phase out" our elk ranching operations. Our ranchers are just like any other rancher. We all come from different walks of life, different incomes, but share the same goals. Our goal is and has always been to ensure that we are raising genetically sound animals who are disease free. Should these animals ever escape, that the wild elk population be safe from any "impurities" or disease. CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease has been found in other states, however has never been found in Idaho's domesticated herds. Our animals are even more regulated than the average cow. EVERY single animal over 16 months of age is tested for CWD upon slaughter. Each ranch has individual records which reflect all births, deaths, purchases and/or transfers on their farm. All animals that are brought into our facilties from other herds and out of state, have to have prior approval from our Idaho State Veterinarian in order to make certain that these animals have all the proper documentation for disease, purities, etc. Annual inventories are done by the ISDA on all farms to make certain ALL animals are accounted for. It seems outrageous that these groups are attempting to ban an entire industry, when they don't even have any solid scientific evidence that supports their disease claims within our Idaho domesticated herds. All of this media hype which has been created is a result of F&G's scare tactics and misinformation which they continue to spread throughout our media.
